Getting Started with your XO.

To get started with your XO, first install the battery into the back of the laptop and use the power cord to plug the laptop into an electrical outlet to begin charging the battery. Then, rotate the green antennae ears up, open the laptop, and press the power button to turn the XO on. To learn more about the XO and what it can do, visit www.laptop.org/gettingstarted.

You are now part of a global community.

By participating in Give One Get One, you are part of a worldwide community of people who are actively helping to make the XO all that it can be. In early 2008, we will add a community section to our web site, where XO users can learn about other XO users around the globe, provide essential feedback, and perhaps even help create open-source educational content for the XO laptop. A new look for a new kind of computer.

Right away, you’ll notice that the XO doesn’t look or function the way you’re probably used to. That’s because the XO runs on Linux, a free and open-source operating system. Along with being one of the essential ways to keep the cost of the XO laptop low, it also allows for ongoing development of free, downloadable applications. In addition to built-in content that includes Google applications, SimCity, and GCompris (a suite of award-winning educational software for children), there are currently over 2500 software developers around the world developing content for the XO.

Troubleshooting

Because OLPC is a non-profit company, we are unable to provide direct technical support. One goal of the project is that children will learn to troubleshoot the XO themselves and subsequently use their experiences to help others. This support process is already underway in our international deployments – we encourage you to participate in this support network.
